From Authentic to "Authenticized": Reconceptualizing Language Teacher Identity and AI-Driven Materials

SMStefano Maranzana

Key Points

  • The aim is to investigate how generative AI influences language teacher identity and their ability to create engaging instructional materials.
  • Examined existing literature on language teacher identity and AI in education
  • Introduced AI tools for generating personalized listening tasks
  • Analyzed the challenges in using traditional authentic materials
  • AI-generated podcasts are identified as effective tools for creating 'authenticized' learning materials.
  • These materials address gaps in traditional content that often fails to engage L2 learners.
  • The use of GenAI tools enhances teachers' pedagogical agency in material creation.

Abstract

Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) creates a pivotal moment for language teacher identity (LTI),introducing productive tensions as educators navigate technological change (Lan, 2024). LTI is acomplex construct, understood as the active, conscious way teachers perceive themselves and areperceived by others within their professional roles (Beijaard, Meijer, Richards, 2006) and traditional created materials, whichcan lack engagement and feel unnatural (Ellis, 1999; Moorhouse Satvati et al., 2025).
