Abstract

A broadly representative faculty benefits student learning and the practice of science. In the context of environmental science and sustainability, a more representative and inclusive community of investigators expands the scope of research and the range of research strategies. To achieve greater representation, we need to alter traditional approaches to faculty recruiting and faculty development. This essay describes perspectives and practices, grounded in the framework of “inclusive excellence”, that can bolster initiatives to improve representation in environmental science and sustainability. Re-evaluation of the use of merit and merit criteria, consideration of interdisciplinary work, and a more individualized approach to investment in faculty success can provide opportunities to increase the representation of individuals from underserved groups.
