AbstractIn oral and maxillofacial surgery, the last phase of a surgical operation is represented by the tissue suture, that allows the wound lips edges approximation and their stabilization, to promote haemostasis, to avoid the alimentary residues accumulation on the incision line and allow the first intention healing. The history of natural sutures is studied historically till the present moment, when synthetic sutures are placed during innumerable procedures every day. In this millennium, long history of sutures, the early work of Edwin smith, Hippocrates, Sushruta, Galen, Albucasis, Avicenna Celsus, Pare and Lister is recognised. The goal of the study is to review the history and innovations of suture used in oral and maxillofacial surgery.
