Abstract

The Polio eradication initiative in Kenya has concluded, leaving community health volunteers (CHVs) as a critical component of ongoing polio surveillance and prevention efforts. A mixed-methods approach was employed, including quantitative data analysis from health records and qualitative interviews with CHVs to assess their effectiveness and challenges. CHVs conducted a statistically significant (p < 0. 05) 20% more home visits per month compared to baseline levels, contributing to higher vaccination coverage in remote areas (89%). Community health volunteers played a pivotal role in maintaining polio prevention efforts post-eradication by enhancing community engagement and access to vaccines. Continued support for CHVs is recommended to sustain their effectiveness, including training on new surveillance technologies and improved operational logistics.
