Key Points

  • The aim is to create a standardized metadata framework for animal phenotyping to improve data integration and usability.
  • Adaptation of the MIAPPE checklist for animal phenotyping
  • Development of a minimal metadata standard
  • Evaluation of inconsistencies in current metadata practices
  • Identification of major gaps in metadata collection
  • Proposal of a standardized minimal metadata framework
  • Potential improvement in data reproducibility and interoperability across species

Abstract

Animal phenotyping (e.g., FAANG, PigWeb) generate vast datasets critical for genomics, welfare, and precision livestock farming. However, inconsistent metadata collectionhampers data integration, reproducibility, and reuse across species and projects. We propose a unified minimal metadata standard for animal phenotyping by adapting theMIAPPE (Minimum Information About Plant Phenotyping Experiments) checklist, a well-establishedframework in plant science, to address animal-specific requirements.
