Key Points

  • Rivers in the Qilian Mountain area show concerning levels of total mercury, with an average concentration of 25.74 ng/L.
  • Total suspended particles explain up to 86% of total mercury and 47% of methylmercury changes in river concentrations.
  • Analysis indicates human activities increase the interaction effect of total suspended particles on methylmercury levels to 72%.
  • Ecological risk assessments highlight that 52% of surveyed river sites in the Heihe Basin show potential chronic moderate mercury risk, necessitating immediate attention.
