Heritage Assessment at Shootin Alley Wind Turbine, Bishop's Castle, Shropshire

BMBryn W Morris

Key Points

  • To assess the heritage impact of a proposed wind turbine on Scheduled Monuments in the Bishop's Castle area.
  • Conducted a desk-based heritage impact appraisal based on best practices.
  • Visited the locality to gain familiarity with the area.
  • Developed a zone of theoretical visibility (ZTV) to analyze the visual impact.
  • Discussed the significance of local Scheduled Monuments and their settings.
  • Identified three medieval sites likely to experience minor harm from changes in setting.
  • Noted that other Scheduled Monuments are unaffected due to distance or condition.
  • Concluded that the proposed turbine has limited impact on the significance of local monuments.

Abstract

Given the specific emphasis of this report, only a short desk-based appraisal, based on best practice, has been undertaken. The heritage impact appraisal for Scheduled Monuments has been undertaken as a desk-based exercise (as advised by Historic England) but the locality was visited, and the principal author is very familiar with the area. A zone of theoretical visibility (ZTV) has been drawn up to supplement the ZVIs produced by the LVIA consultant3. An abbreviated discussion of the Scheduled Monuments in the local area (within the ZVI and up to 8km distant) has been drawn up to determine the degree to which the significance of those monuments is derived from their setting, and what impact the proposed turbine is likely to have. This desk-based appraisal of the likely impact of the proposed turbine on Scheduled Monuments in the area concludes that there is likely to be a minor level of harm, through change in setting, to three medieval sites: the motte mound at Colebatch, the motte mound at Lower Down, and the castle site at Bishop's Castle. The other Scheduled Monuments in the area fall outside the ZTV, are subject to comprehensive screening, or else their condition or character means that changes to their setting will not make an appreciable difference to their significance.
