Key Points

  • To analyze the performance of Nordex wind power plants during the unprecedented blackout in the Iberian Peninsula.
  • Detailed analysis of Iberian grid conditions before the blackout
  • Comparison of reports from ENTSO-E and the Spanish ministry with Nordex recordings
  • Overview of power oscillations recorded before the event
  • Examination of operational data from Nordex wind farms during the blackout
  • Identified significant power oscillations 30 to 10 minutes prior to the blackout
  • Nordex wind farms showed varying performance during the blackout event
  • Proposed potential strategies for preventing future blackouts based on findings

Abstract

This paper presents the analysis and performance recordings registered on Nordex wind power plants during the Iberian Peninsula blackout happened last April 2025. On Monday April 28th at 12:33 PM, an unprecedented blackout affected the entire Iberian Peninsula, including Spain, Portugal and a small part of south-west France. This event was the first "zero energy" case in the Iberian region's history. Firstly, the paper presents what was the Iberian grid situation observed before the blackout. Secondly, the paper summarizes what was the sequence of events, comparing ENTSO-E and Spanish ministry reports published about the sequence of events with the recordings from Nordex’s wind power plants operating close to where the blackout was originated. Moreover, an overview on power oscillations observed 30 and 10 min before the event and a short view of the on-going root cause analysis is included. Finally, the paper shows how Nordex wind farms operated during the event, offering existing and future solutions that Nordex’s wind power plants could provide to prevent from similar blackout events in the future.
