Abstract

The increasing adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming the construction industry. However, its practical implementation remains limited. This study aims to investigate the acceptance of AI in construction practice and to identify key challenges and enabling factors influencing its implementation. A mixed-methods approach was applied, combining an online survey of construction professionals and students (n = 159) with expert interviews. The results show that technological progress and societal expectations are major drivers of AI adoption, while legal uncertainties, safety regulations, and insufficient user knowledge constitute significant barriers. Variations in acceptance levels across age groups and professional roles underline the importance of human and organizational factors in the implementation process. Based on the empirical findings and Kotter’s 8-step change management model, a tailored AI implementation framework for the construction industry is developed. The framework emphasizes early stakeholder involvement, transparent communication, targeted training measures, pilot projects, and continuous feedback mechanisms to foster acceptance and sustainable integration. This study provides practical recommendations for organizations seeking to implement AI solutions and contributes to a structured understanding of change management in the digital transformation of the construction industry.
