Open data initiatives have gained traction in various regions to enhance transparency and accountability, particularly in governance. Ethiopia has seen significant efforts towards making government information more accessible to citizens. The study employs a qualitative research approach, analysing case studies from different regions of Ethiopia where open data platforms have been implemented. Data collection includes interviews with government officials, civil society organizations, and citizens to understand perceptions and impacts. Findings indicate that while there has been an increase in the availability of open datasets, their usage is still limited by issues such as low awareness among public sector agencies and insufficient technical infrastructure. Open data initiatives have not yet fully materialized into meaningful improvements in governance transparency. However, they represent a promising avenue for enhancing accountability and fostering civic engagement. Future research should focus on developing comprehensive training programmes for government officials to effectively utilise open data platforms. Additionally, improving technical infrastructure and increasing public awareness are crucial steps towards realising the full potential of open data initiatives in Ethiopia.
