Abstract

The organic-doped inorganic composite membranes have diverse potential for water purification, particularly for desalination and heavy metal ion filtration. In the interest of obtaining a stable membrane, this study focused on synthesizing a composite membrane composed of the optimized ratio between organic polymer (PVC) and inorganic manganese phosphate salt (MP-50%) and zeolite (Ze-25%). The developed Ze 0.25 /MP 0.5 @PVC composite ion exchange membrane showcased excellent performance. The membrane potentials were determined using electrolyte solutions of NaCl, KCl, KNO 3 and NaNO 3 , and it was in the order: NaCl>KCl>NaHCO 3 >KHCO 3 , while cation transport number (t (+)), mobility ratio and charge effectiveness decreased with increasing charge density. 100-150°C heating range provided the best mechanical and thermal performance of Ze 0.25 /MP 0.5 @PVC without causing any swelling. The water uptake % and thickness of the developed membrane were found to be 0.08% and 0.045 cm, respectively. The fixed charge density associated with feed composition was determined using Teorell-Meyer-Sievers method. A high pressure-normalized flux of 973 LMH.bar -1 confirmed the permeable nature of the membrane, thereby ensuring efficient transmission of electrolyte solutions through the membrane interface. The new composite membrane can serve as a powerful separation unit to facilitate its usage in various industries. • Ze 0.25 /MP 0.5 @PVC composite membrane has shown outstanding ion exchange properties. • Membrane’s electrolyte potential following KCl>NaCl> KHCO 3 >NaHCO 3 order. • Thickness, and water uptake percentage of composite membrane are 0.075 cm, 0.08%. • Teorell-Meyer-Sievers method determined the fixed charge density of membrane. • Experimental results and theoretical predictions were nearly in agreement.
