African universities play a pivotal role in knowledge production and dissemination within their regions, including Kenya, contributing to national development and scholarly discourse. The research employs a qualitative inquiry approach, utilising semi-structured interviews with university faculty and administrators to gather insights into their role in academic output and outreach. University leaders highlighted an active engagement in both local and international knowledge production, with 60% of respondents indicating they were involved in at least one collaborative research project across borders. Findings suggest that African universities are integral to the region's intellectual landscape, particularly in fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and global academic partnerships. Advocacy for increased funding and support for university-led knowledge production initiatives could further enhance their impact on societal development.
