Abstract

Maize is a critical staple crop in Central Kenya, facing increasing challenges from climate change, including unpredictable rainfall and temperature shifts. The study employed semi-structured interviews with 30 smallholder maize farmers in Central Kenya. Data analysis involved thematic content coding of interview transcripts. Farmers reported a preference for insurance as the most preferred risk management strategy, with 67% indicating its effectiveness in mitigating yield losses due to climate variability. Mitigation strategies are essential for sustaining maize agriculture under climate change. Insurance emerges as a prominent and effective method among Central Kenyan farmers. Government support should prioritise insurance schemes and provide training on risk management tools to enhance agricultural resilience in the face of climate change.
