Abstract

As U.S. manufacturing and logistics organizations transition from legacy Value-AddedNetwork (VAN)-based Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) infrastructure toward cloud-nativeintegration platforms, the architectural patterns governing these new systems have receivedlimited systematic treatment in the practitioner literature. This paper presents the PartnerIntegration Reference Architecture (PIRA) — a practitioner framework defining the corearchitectural components, design patterns, and operational systems required to build and sustaina cloud-native B2B integration environment for manufacturing supply chains. Grounded inproduction implementation experience across consumer IoT and semiconductor manufacturingsupply chains, PIRA identifies four interdependent architectural layers: the API gateway andpartner connectivity layer, the canonical data transformation layer, the real-time event handlingand observability layer, and the compliance validation and serialization layer. Quantitativeoutcomes from production deployments are presented, including approximately a 75%reduction in inbound ASN errors, approximately a 50% reduction in partner onboarding time,approximately a 90% reduction in transaction failure rates, and approximately a 90% reductionin document processing time. The paper further establishes alignment between PIRA and activeU.S. federal mandates including NIST SP 800-161r1, the DoD Defense Logistics AgencyDigital Interoperability Strategy, Executive Order 14017 on America's Supply Chains, and theCHIPS and Science Act — demonstrating that cloud-native B2B integration architecture is amatter of national supply chain security, not merely operational optimization.
