Abstract

ABSTRACT Among many of the allotropes of carbon, the nanomaterial “Carbon Nanotubes” (CNTs), has shown significant potential due to its remarkable properties. The self‐healing phenomenon, which focuses on structural integrity, is attracting researchers to explore the capabilities of nanocomposites, aiming to increase service life, enhance durability, and reduce maintenance in advanced structural systems. CNTs are recognized as effective facilitators in promoting the self‐healing capabilities of materials. This review examines the incorporation of CNTs in self‐healing composites, their contributions to structural behavior, and efficacy with healable surfaces. Exceptional mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties, coupled with a high aspect ratio, enable CNTs to serve as reinforcing agents within polymer matrices. The findings indicate that CNTs act as a structural core in the composites, facilitating effective stress transfer, crack bridging, and improved interfacial adhesion. Moreover, investigating the inherent characteristics will guide the effective utilization of the material across advanced aerospace, reinforcement, automotive, and numerous other industries. Thus, this work aims to summarize intrinsic and extrinsic self‐healing methods, reinforced polymer matrices, hybrid composites, and different self‐healing surfaces. With a lack of relevant review work and substantial ongoing research progress, the concentration of CNTs in this new field will drive innovations to new heights.
