Key Points

  • The aim is to explore the factors influencing faculty retention in precepting roles following curriculum reform.
  • Analysis of faculty decisions regarding precepting
  • Longitudinal study design examining relationships over time
  • Focus on personal and structural motivators influencing faculty continuation
  • Personal relationships with students are the strongest motivator for faculty to continue precepting.
  • Structural factors play a significant role in faculty decisions, overshadowing curriculum dissatisfaction.
  • First-year faculty are particularly at risk for attrition, highlighting a need for targeted support.

Abstract

Faculty decisions to continue or discontinue precepting were driven primarily by personal or structural factors rather than dissatisfaction with the curriculum. Consistent with SDT, the longitudinal relationship with students was the strongest motivator to precept, suggesting the LIC model itself may support faculty recruitment and retention. First-year faculty are at greatest risk for attrition and represent a key target for intervention and support aimed at retention.
