Key Points

  • This work aims to formalize the concept of reality-contact and to distinguish grounded form from superficial coherence within the framework of Structural Intelligence.
  • Introduces the Drift Ratio as a concept to track representation versus answerability.
  • Analyzes symbolic candidates like the golden ratio and pi in relation to reality-contact.
  • Situates the Drift Ratio within Structural Intelligence's framework, emphasizing coherence and contact distinctions.
  • Illustrates the model through case studies of high-drift and low-drift scenarios.
  • Establishes that no single number can capture the essence of reality-contact.
  • Demonstrates how representation can exceed answerability through the proposed Drift Ratio.
  • Presents a structured conceptual tool rather than a mathematical proof to assess grounded responses.

Abstract

This paper asks whether reality-contact can be formalized. It begins from a familiar temptation: the search for a single number, pattern, or proportion that might mark what is real. The paper considers symbolic candidates such as the golden ratio, zero, one, and pi, and argues that while they illuminate different aspects of order, limit, and intelligibility, none of them can function as contact itself. Contact is not a number but a relation between a form and what can push back on it. For that reason, Structural Intelligence (SI) does not culminate in a sacred constant, but in a diagnostic ratio. The paper proposes the Drift Ratio as a formal instrument for tracking when representation outruns answerability. In its compressed form, the model can be expressed as the ratio of representation to answerability. In its operational form, it compares performance, actor inflation, and delay to contact with constraint, revision capacity, load survival, and consequence internalization. The aim is not to produce a final law of reality, but to offer a disciplined way of distinguishing grounded form from cheap coherence. The argument proceeds in four stages. First, it explains why the search for a number of reality is philosophically attractive and why symbolically rich candidates still fail to capture contact itself. Second, it situates the ratio within the broader framework of Structural Intelligence, especially its distinction between coherence and contact, and its concern with answerability under pressure. Third, it proposes a formal diagnostic and defines its variables in plain language. Fourth, it tests the model across illustrative cases, including both high-drift failures and low-drift grounded responses. The result is not a mathematical proof, but a structured conceptual instrument: SI does not discover the number of reality; it identifies the ratio by which representation can outrun answerability.
