Key Points

  • The aim is to document the first occurrence of Soliclymenia paradoxa in the Middle Urals and review its historical study.
  • Geological analysis of the Gubakha Formation
  • Identification of ammonoid fossils
  • Correlation with established conodont zones
  • Soliclymenia paradoxa has not been previously reported from the Middle Urals
  • This record extends the known geographical range of the species
  • The ammonoid bed ages align with specific conodont zones

Abstract

The Late Devonian ammonoid species Soliclymenia paradoxa (Münster) is recorded for the first time from the Middle Urals, from the Gubakha Formation (Famennian) near the town of Gubakha (Perm Region, Russia). Previously, this species was known only from Western and Central Europe and South China. It is the first record of a representative of the genus Soliclymenia Schindewolf from the Middle Urals. The history of the study of the genus Soliclymenia and its species is reviewed. The age of the bed with ammonoids is within the Muessenbiaergia parundulata–Effenbergia lens ammonoid zones, correlated with the Upper expansa–Lower praesulcata conodont zones.
