Key Points

  • To report a case of microbial keratitis due to Neoscytalidium dimidiatum and review relevant literature.
  • Detailed microbiological evaluation and corneal scraping were conducted.
  • Patient was treated with topical natamycin, voriconazole, atropine, and oral itraconazole.
  • Follow-up assessment was performed at six weeks.
  • Patient's visual acuity improved to 6/9 after treatment.
  • Presence of a quiet eye and nebulomacular corneal scar noted at follow-up.
  • Microbiological investigations accurately identified N. dimidiatum as the causative agent.

Abstract

We present the case of a 68-year-old woman who presented with left eye corneal ulcer. Corneal scrapings and microbiological evaluation revealed fungal corneal infection due to Neoscytalidium dimidiatum. The patient responded well to topical natamycin, voriconazole, atropine, and oral itraconazole. At six-week follow-up, visual acuity improved to 6/9 with a quiet eye and a nebulomacular corneal scar. Accurate identification by appropriate microbiological investigations along with a review of literature on N. dimidiatum keratitis is presented.
