Abstract

The main objective of this project was to determine how far along educators and administrators are in their understanding and adoption of CEFR as an assessment framework in their English as Foreign Language (EFL) programs. We were also interested in ascertaining the degree to which CEFR is understood and embraced by educators at other universities throughout Japan and Asia-Pacific rim countries. A CEFR survey was disseminated to EFL educators and staff at Aoyama Gakuin University and other universities throughout Asia, including Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam. The results revealed those embracing CEFR are in early stages of adoption, have been influenced by top-down directives, and obstacles have led to misunderstandings about what CEFR actually is and how it should be properly implemented.
