Key Points

  • To evaluate the clinical impact and disease burden of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection in elderly and high-risk adult populations.
  • Assessed RSV infection incidence and clinical outcomes in elderly individuals and high-risk adults.
  • Compared the disease burden of RSV directly against nonpandemic influenza A within a population characterized by high influenza vaccine uptake.
  • RSV infection represents an important source of illness in elderly and high-risk adults, causing a disease burden similar in magnitude to nonpandemic influenza A.
  • Effective RSV vaccination strategies have significant potential to reduce morbidity in vulnerable adult populations.

Abstract

RSV infection is an important illness in elderly and high-risk adults, with a disease burden similar to that of nonpandemic influenza A in a population in which the prevalence of vaccination for influenza is high. An effective RSV vaccine may offer benefits for these adults.
