Abstract

This study investigated internet-based services in academic libraries: Perception in availability of use, challenges and prospects in academic libraries in Cross River State, Nigeria. A validated structured questionnaire was used to collect information from the respondents used for the study. The research design adopted for the study was the survey research design. A population of eighty-five academic librarians from tertiary institution libraries in Cross River State was used for the study. Frequency and percentages were used for data analysis. The findings of the study revealed that some internet services such as online acquisition services, resource sharing, e-mail reference services etc. were available in the surveyed libraries, it was further revealed that many problems and challenges such as inadequate funding, erratic power supply, non-existent hardware and software, acquisition cost etc. militated against internet-based services in academic libraries in the study area. With the above findings, the researchers recommended among others that, internet-based services should be given priority in academic libraries to meet the numerous information needs of library patrons and to meet the global challenge of information explosion.
