Key Points

  • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of physical exercise interventions for preventing and treating osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.
  • Assessed bone density outcomes following exercise interventions compared with non-exercising control groups in postmenopausal women.
  • Exercise demonstrated a statistically significant, relatively small effect on improving bone density compared with control groups.
  • Physical activity was identified as a potentially safe and effective non-pharmacological strategy to avert postmenopausal bone loss.

Abstract

Our results suggest a relatively small statistically significant, but possibly important, effect of exercise on bone density compared with control groups. Exercise has the potential to be a safe and effective way to avert bone loss in postmenopausal women.
