Abstract

ABSTRACT Adult hippocampal neurogenesis (AHN) refers to the continuous generation of new neurons in the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus in adult mammals. This process holds significant implications for learning, memory, emotional regulation, and the progression of neurodegenerative diseases. This article reviews the roles and mechanisms of glucose metabolism-related pathways, including glycolysis, pentose phosphate pathway, tricarboxylic acid cycle, and lactate metabolism, in regulating AHN. Glucose metabolism not only provides energy for neurogenesis but also participates in cell fate decisions through signaling pathways, affecting the proliferation, differentiation, and survival of neural stem cells. In addition, the article also explores the scientific issues and translational challenges in the current research field and looks forward to future research directions, providing a theoretical basis for an in-depth understanding of AHN regulatory mechanisms and the treatment of related diseases.
