Abstract

A Review of the literature indicated that women who have had an abortion face a risk of mental disorders, particularly in the presence of negative emotional reactions. The negative effects on mental health post-abortion are more common, while one study found a lower increase in psychiatric contact after abortion compared to childbirth. Additionally, findings on self-esteem after abortion reported mixed findings and concluded there is a correlation between abortion and subsequent risks for mental health . A meta-analytic review of the abortion and mental health literature also demonstrated a consistent association between abortion and an increased risk of psychological problems even if the effects were varied depending on the comparison group, such as those without abortions or those who delivered unintended pregnancies, as well as the type of mental health issues examined, including alcohol misuse, marijuana use, anxiety, depression, and suicidal behaviors. Women who had undergone an abortion were found to have an 81% increased risk of suffering from mental health problems, with nearly 10% of these issues directly attributable to the abortion procedure. Therefore, pregnancy loss is the most common adverse outcome for women expecting a baby. Although different types of gestational loss may have common features, each can affect the future mental health of couples in different ways . Risk factors for miscarriage include very young or older female age (younger than 20 years and older than 35 years), older male age (older than 40 years), very low or very high body-mass index, previous miscarriages, smoking, alcohol, stress, and working night shifts . This systematic review synthesize available evidences on post abortion common mental disorders and their associated factor among women in the reproductive age uisng mixed method systematic reviews.
