Key Points

  • This research aims to evaluate the operational durability of graphitized electrodes using FMEA methodology.
  • Analyzed causes of increased consumption of graphitized electrodes in arc steel-making furnaces.
  • Applied FMEA to identify failure modes and effects in electrode operation.
  • Prioritized problems to enable corrective actions in electrode preparation and steelmaking technology.
  • Identified specific causes of electrode consumption that can be addressed.
  • Showed that FMEA analysis could reduce graphite consumption per ton of steel.
  • Proposed changes that could enhance electrode quality and increase customer satisfaction.

Abstract

The problems that arise during the operation of electrode products in arc steel‑making furnaces are considered. Some causes of increased consumption of graphitized electrodes during steelmaking are analyzed in detail. The FMEA methodology (Failure Mode and Effect Analysis) is widely used to analyze types and consequences of failures; it enables minimizing the time required for analysis, simplifying documentation, and reducing ambiguities in risk criteria. It is shown that FMEA analysis data can be used to reduce the specific consumption of graphite per ton of steel produced. Prioritizing problems makes it possible to implement changes and corrective actions not only in the steelmaking technology but also in the preparation of graphitized electrodes and stubs. This will improve the quality of delivered electrode products and raise customer satisfaction while minimizing losses of material and human resources.
