Long versus short cephalomedullary femoral nail for treatment of unstable intertrochanteric fractures: A single-blinded randomized controlled study

AAAbdelrahman Amir AbouelElaHAHaytham Abdel-AzimAKAhmed Sayed Kotb

Key Points

  • The study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of long versus short cephalomedullary nails in treating unstable intertrochanteric fractures.
  • Conducted as a single-blinded randomized controlled trial
  • Compared long and short cephalomedullary nails (CMNs)
  • Emphasized early mobility and functional outcomes
  • Both nail lengths showed suitability for treating unstable fractures
  • Functional outcomes remain satisfactory regardless of nail length
  • Calls for larger studies with updated classification systems considering osteoporosis

Abstract

Irrespective of the length, CMNs are suitable for the treatment of unstable ITF, aiming to achieve early mobility and satisfactory functional outcome. Further large-sampled RCTs need to be conducted comparing both GPs based on more recent CT-based classification systems with osteoporosis considered.
