Bolsover District Council are undertaking a scheme for Heritage preservation, Interpretation and Environmental Improvement in Bolsover town centre. As part of this scheme improvements are being made to the northern entrance to Hornscroft Park. This lies adjacent to the Hornscroft Park section of the Entrenchments, a Scheduled Ancient Monument (SAM Derby 95, SMR Bolsover 11205). An archaeological watching brief was therefore required on the works at the northern entrance to Hornscroft Park and ARCUS were appointed to undertake the work. This report documents the results of the watching brief. The watching brief identified features in all areas that were stripped or excavated. However, all of these features and the finds associated with them appeared to be nineteenth or twentieth century in date. These included brick structures, paths and one stone foundation wall. There was one feature in area 2 that could relate to the Bolsover Entrenchments. This was the southern cut, in the area which though only containing modern pottery in its upper fills was not bottomed and may have a much earlier origin. No evidence was recovered to suggest that the Bolsover Entrenchments extended into area 1.
