Key Points

  • This study aims to explore how coping strategies impact empathy and professional quality of life among dental hygienists.
  • Conducted a cross-sectional survey of dental hygienists
  • Assessed coping styles, empathy, and professional quality of life
  • Analyzed relationships between variables using statistical methods
  • Task-coping styles are associated with increased empathy
  • Emotion-focused coping leads to greater vulnerability to secondary traumatic stress
  • Burnout is exacerbated by maladaptive coping strategies

Abstract

Findings suggest that in the dental hygiene profession, coping styles play a significant role in empathy and the different aspects of subjects' professional quality of life. While task-coping style positively affects subjects' empathy, emotion-focused coping causes dental hygienists to be more vulnerable to secondary traumatic stress and burnout.
