Enhanced performance in low band gap polymer solar cells via surface lattice resonance of non-noble metals

SMSimenew A. MulatFHFekadu G. HoneNBNika Bekri

Key Points

  • The research aims to improve light absorption in thin-film organic solar cells by utilizing non-noble metals.
  • Examined the effect of plasmonic nanoparticles on light absorption in organic solar cells.
  • Evaluated the performance of thin-film organic solar cells with varied active layer thicknesses.
  • Analyzed photon harvesting efficiency using surface lattice resonance enhancements.
  • Enhanced light absorption was observed in the organic solar cells with plasmonic nanoparticles.
  • The improved performance occurred without increasing the thickness of the active layer.
  • Higher photon harvesting efficiency was achieved, leading to potential gains in solar cell performance.

Abstract

Thin-film organic solar cells (OSCs) have limited light absorption due to their thin active layers, constrained by short carrier diffusion lengths. Plasmonic nanoparticles enhance absorption by acting as nanoscale light sources, improving photon harvesting without increasing thickness.
