Educational Strategies for Managing Grief in Primary Education from Silence to Accompaniment

Grief is a complex emotional process that significantly affects the health and well-being of school-age children. Educational institutions require effective pedagogical responses that guarantee a safe environment conducive to students’ emotional well-being and resilience, or that adequately promote respect and empathy among peers. The objective of this study is to analyze the educational needs of a school regarding the approach to grief at early ages, and to design an intervention adapted to its specific context. To this end, a narrative review of the scientific literature was conducted, using articles from the databases, Web of Science, Scopus, ERIC, and ResearchGate. In addition, semi-structured interviews were carried out with students and the school’s guidance team, complemented by a contextual analysis through participant observation. The results highlight the need to implement comprehensive intervention models that address grief from emotional, social, and academic perspectives. Although teachers acknowledge the importance of adequate support during grieving processes, not only to foster students’ emotional well-being but also to improve coexistence and academic performance, a significant lack of specific training and resources to effectively manage such situations was identified. As a response, a preventive intervention model is proposed, focused on creating safe and empathetic spaces within the school environment and providing practical, contextually adapted tools for teachers and educational guidance professionals.
