Scrubber on Ships – Impact on the marine environment

KKKatharina KoppeUniversity Hospital BonnUPUlrike PirntkeGerman Environment Agency

Key Points

  • The aim is to evaluate the impact of scrubber technologies on marine environments and propose regulatory measures.
  • Describes various scrubber technologies
  • Examines environmental impacts of discharge water
  • Outlines objectives of the German Environment Agency
  • Identifies harmful effects of scrubber discharge on marine environments
  • Highlights the need for improved regulations
  • Demonstrates the balance between cost-effective fuel use and environmental safety

Abstract

This fact sheet outlines the different scrubber technologies and describes their environmental impacts. These exhaust gas cleaning systems are used on seagoing vessels to comply with sulphur limits and to continue operating on more cost-effective, high-sulphur fuel oils. The fact sheet examines in depth the environmental impact of discharge water when discharged into the sea. It further describes the objectives of the German Environment Agency and outlines proposed regulatory reduction measures.
