This report sets out the results of a watching brief undertaken by Orkney Research Centre for Archaeology (ORCA) in October 2022 to monitor repair works at five existing passing places on the Brodgar road (B9055), between Lochview cottage at the south end of the Ness of Brodgar peninsula and the Ring of Brodgar. This required the machine-excavation of ground for the installation of new road foundations. The archaeological work was necessary due to the proximity of known archaeological sites in the area, including the designated World Heritage Site and Scheduled Monument of the Ring of Brodgar, and the potential for unknown archaeological remains. Following consultation with the Local Authority Archaeologist, and in line with best practice, all ground-breaking works associated with the project were monitored. Possible midden deposits were exposed in Passing Places 1 and 2. The material in Passing Place 1 may relate to the Ness of Brodgar Neolithic settlement immediately to the west of the Site. No other features or material of archaeological significance were identified during the programme of archaeological works and no dateable material was recovered.
