Key Points

  • The study aims to explore the efficacy of nebulized albuterol for managing food impaction in pediatric patients with eosinophilic esophagitis.
  • Administered nebulized albuterol (2.5 mg/2 mL) to five children with eosinophilic esophagitis and food impaction.
  • Instructed patients to breathe and swallow aerosol condensate.
  • Performed endoscopy with biopsies to confirm eosinophilic esophagitis.
  • Four out of five patients experienced relief from food impaction after nebulized albuterol treatment.
  • Endoscopic evaluations confirmed the diagnosis of eosinophilic esophagitis in all patients.

Abstract

Food impaction (FI) is a manifestation of eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) and requires endoscopic removal. We report the response to nebulized albuterol in five children with EoE and FI. Albuterol (2.5 mg/2 mL) was administered via nebulizer, with instructions to breathe and swallow the aerosol condensate. Four of five patients experienced relief of the impaction. Endoscopy with biopsies performed acutely in one patient and subsequently in the others, confirmed EoE in all patients. This technique represents a novel approach for non-endoscopic management of FI in EoE.
