Key Points

  • This research aims to evaluate how transitioning cigarette sales to state-controlled outlets affects tobacco-related mortality.
  • Analyzed the impact of cigarette sales policies on mortality rates
  • Evaluated smoking prevalence in relation to policy changes
  • Transitioning sales may significantly reduce tobacco-related mortality
  • Greater reductions in smoking prevalence could enhance policy effectiveness

Abstract

Transitioning cigarette sales to state-controlled outlets appears to be a potent tobacco control strategy that may reduce tobacco-related mortality. Policy impact on mortality may be even greater if cigarette smoking prevalence is reduced more than we estimated. To reach an endgame, states should prioritize more aggressive tobacco control policies that limit the availability of cigarettes.
