Abstract

Objective: Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is a specialized and gentle massage technique that promotes lymph flow by manipulating the skin with repetitive, circular, and spiral movements. Recent research highlights its broader applications, including immune function enhancement and support for postoperative recovery This study aimed to examine the effects of MLD on immune and hematological markers in healthy individuals, assessing if MLD enhances immune function and blood health compared to diaphragmatic breathing. Method: An observational-longitudinal study was conducted on 10 healthy women, randomly assigned to either MLD treatment (Group 1) or diaphragmatic breathing exercises (Group 2). Over 5 consecutive days, daily blood and urine samples were collected to analyze erythrocytes, hematocrit, lymphocytes, leukocytes, uric acid, and urine pH. Data were statistically evaluated using nonparametric tests. Results: MLD was associated with significant increases in lymphocyte counts on Days 3 and 4, suggesting immune activation. Erythrocyte and hematocrit levels also increased by Day 3, indicating improved oxygen transport. Diaphragmatic breathing showed similar hematological improvements, with increased erythrocytes and hematocrit levels on Days 1 and 3. No significant changes in uric acid or urine pH were observed in either group. Conclusions: MLD may enhance immune surveillance and hematological function in healthy individuals, suggesting its potential as a preventive health measure. Diaphragmatic breathing also offered benefits for blood health. Further studies with larger samples are recommended to strengthen these findings and explore additional biomarkers.
