Key Points

  • This research aims to investigate the effectiveness of PtCu bimetallic nanoparticles on MoS2 for furfural hydrogenation.
  • Synthesize PtCu nanoparticles supported on MoS2 nanosheets.
  • Evaluate catalytic performance for furfural conversion and selectivity to 2-methylfuran.
  • Conduct reactions at 180 °C and 2.0 MPa H2 pressure using isopropanol.
  • Achieved 99.4% conversion of furfural.
  • Obtained 95.3% selectivity towards 2-methylfuran.
  • Improved performance compared to monometallic Pt/MoS2 and Cu/MoS2 catalysts.

Abstract

Highly dispersed and tiny PtCu particles anchored on MoS2 nanosheets show 99.4% furfural conversion and 95.3% 2-methylfuran selectivity under the reaction conditions of 180 °C, 2.0 h, 2.0 MPa H2 and isopropanol as the solvent, significantly superior to those of the Pt/MoS2 and Cu/MoS2 monometallic catalysts, mainly due to electron transfer from Cu to Pt.
