This article explores the sartorial evolution of the yakshi, a supernatural female spirit, as represented in Malayalam horror films. Traditionally depicted as captivating and spiteful, the yakshi figure serves as a recurring horror trope in Malayalam cinema. Over time, her portrayal has transformed notably, becoming more layered and symbolic. This article argues that the sartorial evolution of the yakshi in Malayalam horror films, highlighted through her costume and adornments, has played a pivotal role in redefining her character. It asserts that this transformation positions her as a symbol of social change and leverages her visual identity as a compelling narrative device. By analyzing early and modern horror films, this study reveals how the sartorial evolution of the yakshi figures shapes the evolving portrayal of femininity by challenging traditional ideologies. It also contributes to the understanding of how the yakshi’s metamorphosis from a traditional horror trope to a token of progress results in more nuanced storytelling.
