Key Points

  • This research aims to develop a theoretical model explaining how political polarization occurs through stabilized inference and evidential uptake.
  • Develops a theoretical model based on stabilized inference.
  • Utilizes concepts from predictive processing to differentiate types of evidence.
  • Explores implications for political judgment and institutional dynamics.
  • Identifies that political polarization is influenced by asymmetries in how evidence is accepted.
  • Demonstrates that identity-linked expectations shape perceptions of evidence.
  • Highlights the role of predictive processing in understanding political judgment.

Abstract

This preprint develops a theoretical model of political polarization based on the concept of stabilized inference. It argues that polarization may arise not only from disagreement over evidence, but from asymmetries in evidential uptake, where identity-linked expectations shape what counts as evidence in the first place. The paper draws on predictive processing to formalize this distinction and explores its implications for political judgment and institutional dynamics. This version is made available to facilitate early discussion and feedback.
