Key Points

  • This research aims to investigate the pottery production methods and exchange practices in ancient Yeha, Ethiopia.
  • Conducted archaeometric analyses on ancient pottery
  • Focused on identifying local production techniques
  • Analyzed ceramic vessels similar to South Arabian models
  • Ceramic vessels were produced in multiple household units rather than centralized workshops
  • Evidence suggests diverse production methods among households
  • Findings challenge previous assumptions of specialized pottery workshops

Abstract

In order to explore the ancient pottery production and exchange in Yeha/Ethiopia archaeometric analyses have been carried out, with the main focus on the identification of the local production. The results indicate that ceramic vessels – even those adapted from South Arabian models – were not produced in one or a few centralized and specialized workshops but in several household units.
