Key Points

  • The aim is to improve the catalytic efficiency of nickel species for efficiently depolymerizing polyethylene terephthalate (PET).
  • Catalyst prepared via co-precipitation method
  • Theoretical and experimental validation of electronic modulation
  • Scaled for industrial application
  • Achieved near-quantitative recovery of dimethyl terephthalate from PET
  • Demonstrated balance between substrate activation and product desorption
  • Maximized catalytic efficiency with engineered nickel species

Abstract

Ga result in appropriate Lewis acidity, enabling near-quantitative dimethyl terephthalate recovery from post-consumer PET. Theoretical and experimental validation suggests that such bidirectional electronic modulation balances substrate activation and product desorption, thereby maximizing catalytic efficiency. The catalyst is prepared via an industrially-established co-precipitation method and is readily scalable.
