Abstract

Cancer is one of the major causes of fatality among the world, and traditional chemotherapy is one of the most important methods of treatment. Nevertheless, chemotherapy is frequently associated with extreme side effects, and drug resistance. Ferroptosis is a relatively innovative type of controlled cell death involving lipid peroxidation depends on iron and has become an attractive alternative treatment of cancer. Ferroptosis causing medications get specific to cancer cells because they interfere with redox homeostasis and iron metabolism. This review provides an in-depth comparison between ferroptosis-inducing agents and conventional chemotherapy in terms of their mechanisms, efficacy, advantages, and limitations. It also highlights the possibilities of combination therapies in overcoming chemoresistance and the consequent enhancement of treatment outcomes.
