Beyond the Screen

The integration of metaverse platforms into language teaching offers a more straightforward, realistic, and immersive experience than two-dimensional (2D) online learning and conventional Communicative Language Teaching (CLT). Both options struggle to offer a powerful social experience and natural interaction. The term “metaverse” refers to Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and three-dimensional (3D) virtual environments that simulate the real world. It creates a context in which students can master the content provided through immersion. Moreover, the technology applied in language learning has moved beyond Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) to Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL), resulting in a technology-immersive, supported learning that provides a form of experiential language learning. The present study discusses how metaverse technology can support experiential language learning by enabling students to learn outside the classroom and apply what they learn in real life. It is the features and aspects of the metaverse that allow students to experience the language-learning process in a socially provocative setting.
