Key Points

  • This research aims to investigate the conditions for gasless combustion wave transitions across an air gap in a titanium-silicon mixture.
  • Studied gasless combustion wave propagation in cylindrical Ti–Si samples separated by an air gap.
  • Utilized both experimental methods and computational techniques to analyze the transition process.
  • Developed a mathematical model to calculate effective emissivity of the combustion surface.
  • Identified critical conditions for the transition of combustion waves.
  • Calculated the emissivity factor of titanium silicide using experimental data and the mathematical model.

Abstract

The regularities governing the transition of a gasless combustion wave across an air gap separating two cylindrical samples of different diameters, prepared from a Ti–Si mixture, are studied. Critical conditions for this transition process are investigated using both experimental and computational methods. A mathematical model is proposed, and, in conjunction with experimental data, it is used to calculate the effective emissivity of the combustion surface. An estimate for the emissivity factor of titanium silicide is obtained.
