Severity of hypertension was associated with 5-year mortality; leaves open whether modern therapies modify these historical associations.
In patients with essential hypertension treated conservatively, 5-year mortality is strongly associated with the initial severity of blood pressure elevation and vascular involvement, with significantly higher mortality observed in men.
Sokolow et al. (1961) studied this question.
