Human Spaceflight Specialized Curriculum for Master in Aerospace at TUM

Abstract

In June 2023 a new professorship in Human Spaceflight Technology (HSP) has stated at the Technical University of Munich (TUM). With it, the curriculum in the field of Human Spaceflight has also increased with new lectures and practical courses. The TUM has offered for many years one main course on Human Spaceflight. Starting in the Winter Term 2023-2024 that course has been adapted to focus on Human Spaceflight Technology, with special emphasis on the different subsystems required to design a human spaceflight mission. This course is open to students from different disciplines at Master level. An additional theory course on Life Support System (LSS) has been added, to provide the students of Aerospace Master a deeper knowledge on a field that will be widely researched at the professorship. In the summer term, an additional course on Human Spaceflight Operations and Medicine shall be offered. This course will focus on operational aspects, astronaut selection and training as well as medical aspects. Beyond the theory courses, hands-on training opportunities will be offered, starting in summer both for Bachelor and Master students. Two laboratory courses on Life Support Systems will allow students to work on the cultivation of microalgae for space applications and the simulation of LSS systems with the simulation tool V-HAB. Moreover, a spacecraft maneuver seminar will also be offered for the first time at the TUM, where students will learn the theory of rendezvous and docking of crewed capsule, and put it into practice in a simulator. Besides that, the professorship is currently supervising a Human Spaceflight mission design, as a team project for the Aerospace Bachelor students. This paper summarizes the experience of the winter term, including feedback from the students, and the planning of the activities for the summer term.
