Abstract

Reducing aircraft noise and mitigating its noise exposure have been a long-standing global issue. In Japan, since the 1970s, measures have been implemented to reduce noise levels, including promoting the introduction of low-noise aircraft, restriction of operations in late-nighttime zone, optimizing flight operations for noise abatement, improving airport functions (including relocating airport facilities to offshore), and installing sound insulation program in residential areas surrounding airports. As a result, single aircraft noise levels have been significantly reduced; however, the number of flights has increased due to the growth in air traffic demand. This report reviews Japan's measures to address aircraft noise, explains the current noise situation, and discusses the current issues related to aircraft noise, as well as considerations for resolving future aircraft noise issues.
