China's Local Scholarship Goes Global: Revisiting Bilingual Editorial Guidelines for Scholarly Communication Through Internationally Indexed English Academic Abstracts

Summary Two decades after ‘going out’ for local scholarship, China now permits self‐reference and expands bilingual academic abstracts to multimodal formats. Despite policy updates, current revisions still emphasise objectivity as the defining feature of academic abstracts. Soft discipline journals in China provide less rhetorical guidance than hard disciplines. Bilingual academic abstracts, titles, and keywords are cost‐effective and resource‐effective ways to share local knowledge globally. Discipline‐specific and function‐oriented editorial instructions and pedagogical support are needed to promote the global dissemination of local scholarship.
