Abstract

Abstract This study documents the unseasonal and prolonged heavy rain events which occurred in southern China during April 2024. In this series of extreme rainfall events, Guangdong province recorded extreme rainfall exceeding 6‐sigma of climatology, with eleven cities reporting record‐breaking rainfall. Concurrently, the Persian Gulf region also experienced historic precipitation and severe flooding. South Asia, Bangladesh and northeastern India faced extreme weather, including a prolonged heatwave in April 2024. Analysis suggests that there may be potential linkages between these extreme events, involving the ’Quasi‐Resonant Amplification’ of Rossby waves, and highlighting the need for further research into these interconnected phenomena.
