Woodland Access Improvements at Castle Orchard Wood, North of Coombe Bottom, Stourton-with-Gaspar Parish, Wiltshire: Results of Archaeological Monitoring

Archaeological monitoring was carried out by AC archaeology in April 2015, during the construction of an access route through woodland at Castle Orchard Wood, north of Coombe Bottom, Stourton-with-Gaspar Parish, Wiltshire. The improvements to the woodland tracks are being undertaken to give vehicular access to previously inaccessible areas for the purposes of tree felling and extraction. The new access route is positioned within the boundaries of the scheduled monuments known as Orchard Castle (List Entry Number 1005639) and Pen Pits Quern Quarries (List Entry Number 1004687). The access route comprised five sections, totaling 577m in length as well as two turning points. No evidence for archaeological deposits nor artefacts, was present along any part of the route of the new access track.
